External USB and FireWire Recovery

External USB and Firewire devices contain a standard IDE or SATA hard disk drive with a USB to IDE/SATA or Firewire to IDE/SATA interface adaptor to connect with the external casing. These devices are susceptible to the usual faults relating to hard disk drives and also other faults the interface or the casing may bring.

Common faults:

Inadequate venting and cooling systems can cause the hard disk drive to overheat, this can lead to component failure or even media degradation. Most modern external hard disk drives contain a fan to disperse the heat generated by the hard disk drive however over time the fan can become defective resulting in temperature increase above the operating recommendations.

Symptoms of failure:

• Red lights or no lights on enclosure
• Drive not recognised in BIOS or on desktop
• Clicking or grinding noises
• No power or drive not spinning

VenSys Data Solutions have successfully recovered data from all of the above faults, we do NOT recommend running repair utilities such as Chkdsk, Scandisk or Norton as this can result in further irrepairable damage to your valuable data.

The most common external HDD’s we recover from are LaCie, Freecom, Maxtor, Seagate and Western Digital.
